Hey Friends! Happy Feature Friday! This week we visited Duo 58 Coffee Bar & Cafe! Elysia had found this cute little place on Instagram and suggested I go and try it out. :]
Hidden away in an unassuming plaza in Oviedo, DUO 58 is a warm and inviting space with pallets on the wall and retro light fixtures and string lights hanging from the ceiling. This cafe not only serves great coffee, but also orphan care, education, and health care for Haiti, and work for disadvantaged individuals here in Orlando. I sat down and chatted with manager Sam Veatch and Lisa Puckey about the company!
The Company
DUO 58: DUO actually stands for “Do unto others”, and 58 represents the chapter of Isaiah in which verse 10 states:
“and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,
then your light will rise in the darkness,
and your night will become like the noonday.”
This is the essence of their business. DUO 58 is a non profit company, donating its proceeds from its cafe and catering to Mission of Hope Haiti.
DUO 58 was founded by Nathan Seta in 2010 first as a catering company and more recently in November 2015 as a cafe. The current cafe space used to be storage for the catering company. After meeting their clients and doing tastings in the kitchen, they decided to adjust the storage to also serve as a meeting space. From there, the project took on it’s own life, starting as a small area covering 1/3 of the space to the comfortable cafe with tables, couches, recycled pallets, and artwork on the walls.
The Coffee
DUO 58 expertly serves up a simple menu with a variety of coffee drinks from macchiatos to cold brew. Huckleberry Roasters in Denver, Colorado roasts DUO 58’s pour-over, drip, and press coffee, while Lineage Coffee Roasters right here in Orlando takes care of their espresso. The first time I came to the cafe, I had a perfectly smooth cold brew; last time, I had a perfectly Instagrammable cup of cappuccino. DUO 58 bakes their own goodies, like pumpkin bread and cookies, in the kitchen next door, the home of their catering business.
The Cause
Through DUO 58’s partnership with Mission of Hope, every meal purchased provides a meal and a day of education for a Haitian child in need. Although their main focus is on international philanthropy, DUO 58 also helps people here at home in Central Florida. The company has a program for disadvantaged individuals who are unable to find work by traditional means by employing them in the cafe, while providing training and references for future work.
If you happen to find yourself in Oviedo looking for a cozy spot to hang out and have a good cup of coffee, stop in at DUO 58. Not only do they have great coffee, they also do it for a good cause. It’s a lively place to have a meeting or focus on study or work. I know for sure I’ll be visiting with my clients in the area. :]
I want to say a special thanks to Sam and Lisa for their help! It was a pleasure meeting and talking to you both! I hope to see you again soon.
The cafe is open from 8am – 6pm Monday though Friday, 10am – 5pm on Saturday and closed on Sundays. For more about DUO 58 visit their website and their cafe and catering Facebook pages.
